Some love the stones with a deep blue flash. Others look for the silvery white specimens. This stone has a prominent blue adularescence (the special quality that makes the moonstone "glow") but it also has hints of silver and peach in the right lighting conditions. It reminds me of what photographers refer to as "the magic hour"-- the transitional twilight when the sun is setting and the world is bathed in a soft glow. The oval cabochon moonstone measures 13x8.5 and is estimated to weigh 4.7 carats. The cab has a medium dome and the stone has the watery clarity you don't see much in modern moonstones. The gem is framed by an oval scalloped engraved frame that tests as 9K. The overall measurement is 21x17mm and the bail gives 5mm of a drop. This may be a brooch conversion but I tend to doubt it as I ca't see any evidence of a former pin. The pendant is suspended on a rope chain marked and tested for 9K.
The chain is 16 inches long and has a round spring clasp. I doubt the chain is original but it looks well suited to the pendant. The moonstone has nice polish and shows only slight surface wear under magnification. This wonderful necklace weighs 5 grams.
