This is a phenomenal antique Victorian sterling silver book chain necklace and locket. The necklace is rare and outstanding quality. This incredible piece of history was found in a trunk in the attic of an old Victorian estate in London, England. The engraved designs on this piece are extremely beautiful.
The necklace measures 17-3/4" long and has a 1-1/2" extender. The large locket measures 2-1/2" tall and 1-1/2" wide.
The locket opens and closes by a little indentation on the side where you put your thumbnail and press to open. The inside of the locket has blue material - see photos. The silver collar has gorgeous and fancy engravings and is 22 mm wide at its widest point.
The necklace measures 17-3/4" length without counting the extender which is 1-1/2" long. The book chain has both bolt rings original to the period and another section as the locket extender (total length of 19.25) original to the piece. If you have been looking to collect one of these amazing pieces, you know how difficult it is to find one of these with both bolt rings, not to mention finding one with the extender intact. Often times, these book chains due to their age have some flattened links, the one has none and is truly in remarkable condition, obviously well cared for and kept nice for over a century and once belonged to a grand old lady in a time long ago.
The back side of this oval shaped locket is inscribed "From Mamma & Papa 1st March 1889". The intricate details on this piece are spectacular and it is absolutely gorgeous.
The back of the locket has the English sterling silver hallmarks. The collar necklace itself does not have any hallmarks and this was typical for book chains of this period. I have not cleaned this necklace or locket, it has been left with the original patina on the sterling silver as found from the London estate.
This is an incredible find and will appeal to antique collectors of these necklaces. MEASUREMENTS - The large locket measures 2-1/2" tall including the bail and 1-1/2" wide. The clip on extender from which the locket hangs from in the front measures 1-1/2 long.
The book chain necklace measures 17-3/4 long including the clasp. The necklace measures 22 mm wide (almost an inch) at its widest points. WEIGHT - 60.2 grams - see photos. ERA - Victorian, circa 1880's. HALLMARKED - the locket has the Lion passant stamp on the front of the bail for sterling and it has antique British Sterling Hallmarks on the back of the locket - "anchor" for Birmingham, date letter "f" for 1880 and "Lion passant" for sterling silver and makers mark "WT&S" - see photos.
CONDITION - This piece is in very good condition for its age. It has light surface marks that are typical for Victorian jewelry pieces of this age. The hinge is sturdy and closes tightly with a snap. The chain is free flowing and kink free with the clasp working perfectly and holding securely.
